First World vs Emerging – Attitude
My last posting titled “Indonesia: A History of Missed Opportunities?” discusses an interesting observation on why as a country we are rich, but as a people we are still poor, through the lens of institutional economics. Related to that posting, I thought you would enjoy this light-hearted and fun post I found that reveals 9 principles that help make the impossible possible.
The post defines and discusses differences between rich and poor countries. What makes the two different? Is it because the rich countries are blessed with natural resources and poor countries are not? Is it because of a distinct arch in history, growth and maturity that a country has risen above the curve while others have not?
Have a look and let me know what you think.

Indonesia: A History of Missed Opportunities?
One interesting observation about Indonesia is that it is a “rich” yet “poor” country at the same time. Somehow, Indonesia has never realized its full potential in the past and even now.
Anne Booth has characterized the economic history of Indonesia with a melancholy phrase “a history of missed opportunities” (Booth 1998). The missed opportunities refer to the fact that despite its rich natural resources and great variety of cultural traditions, the Indonesian economy has been underperforming for large periods of its history. As a foreign friend put it to me once: “As a country you are richly sitting on a pot of gold … and yet, you as a people, are still poor.”
